Taking
the NCLEX Tests
Everything
you need to know about the National Council License Examination and how to pass
it.
After completing your nursing education, there’s one final step to take before obtaining your nursing license. You must pass the National Council License Examination, or NCLEX.
There are two version of this test: NCLEX-RN for Registered Nursing candidates and the NCLEX-PN for Practical Nursing candidates.
Unlike other tests that judge your ability to learn, NCLEX tests your understanding of what you have already learned.
The NCLEX tests vary in scoring and number of questions, but both assess your ability to make critical decisions in patient care scenarios.
Follow these tips to help you achieve the best score possible:
- Assess Everything. In most cases
something can be done before contacting the MD.
- Prioritize. Delegate to
appropriate staff and prioritize your tasks.
- Know your
Medical Terminology. Make sure you review definitions of all medical abbreviations and terminology.
- Answer Every
Scenario Question with Patient Safety in Mind. Generally, the
correct answer in a particular scenario is the safest approach. It might not be
the fastest, but the old medical adage of “Do No Harm” applies in the NCLEX
test as much as anywhere.
