Neonatal
Nursing
Neonatal Nursing is the specialized nursing practice of caring for newborn infants up to 28 days after birth.
Neonatal nurses are prepared to manage highly technical care and provide a safe, appropriate environment for developing newborns.
Within this nursing specialty, there are three levels of work. Level I involves caring for healthy newborns. Level II involves caring for premature newborns, or ill newborns. Level III involves caring for newborns who cannot be treated at Level I or Level II because they need a high amount of technology to survive.
Neonatal Nurses are either a Registered Nurse with their BSN or MSN, or a Certified Clinical
Nurse Specialist with at least three years of clinical experience.
Certification as a Neonatal Resuscitation Provider, Neonatal Intensive Care
Nursing, or Neonatal Nurse Practitioner may also be required. However,
requirements may vary by institution.
